I was stripping wallpaper and found that a section of plaster came loose under the bay window. I removed what was loose and it has revealed that the brick underneath is loose too. I haven't removed more plaster, but should I? Should I just get some (lime) mortar and try to fix it back in place, or should I be removing more plaster to check out the surrounding bricks/getting someone more knowledgeable to investigate? The house is circa 1910.

Thank you

I think I would be inclined to do that section of the bay completely as you are suggesting as it will be no harder to make good the rest of the problems with the plaster at the same time.

OP,
Pics showing the outside of the bay would help?
Does the remaining plaster seem to be firm?
Have any signs of damp ever been seen on the plaster?

Thanks for your comments so far. Right you are, ree, here is a photo of the outside. We have never observed any damp but have only been in the property since last summer. It's a first floor bay window.

OP,
Thanks for the pic. The flashing at the abutment of roof tile and tile hanging has been incorrectly installed - there's also a lead soaker dispersing the down pipe water - how the soaker is fixed is not clear.
At the badly cut mitre between the side panel & the front panel it looks like foam has been used as a filler/sealant - however, there are orange blobs of something on the foam. Why not pic these blobs
up close & then post on here?

Inside the bay is it only shadow or is the plaster darker at the inside corner near the rad?
Do you detect any unusual smells near to that corner?
