Loud Shuddering noise from hot tap and possibly heating

Hi All,

recently, when I turn the bath hot tap on, just slightly, a very loud shuddering, like a pneumatic drill, can be heard from the pipes/floor/tap? When I turn the tap on fully, it stops. Is this water hammer? It doesn't happen all the time, just every so often. But it is so loud and sounds so violent I thought I'd ask about it.

Also - last night, the central heating came on, and lo and behold - lying in bed, I heard a similar thrumming / thudding noise. I went to the bathroom, this time it was from somewhere else - perhaps the pipes/boiler downstairs?

Any suggestions? Is this water hammer? A dodgy washer? A boiler issue? Water pressure? Do I need to fit one of those pressure valves?
Many thanks

I'd guess the tap is the issue, probably washer or jumper. Take it apart and have a look if you can, it may be obvious when you do that.

your boiler has a cold water isolation tap below the boiler , try closing that at night when you are going to bed, if you still get the noise then it is a boiler or heating fault and not a tap fault, or turn the boiler off and see if the tap still makes the noise

It does it only when boiler is on. Hot tap only slightly on, just more than a trickle. Could it be something to do with steam? Water pressure or temperature? Or something more sinister? Thanks

BTW there is no noise from boiler itself, just pipes near Bath. Not sure where the noise with the heating cane from though

They could be two separate issues - one could be the tap itself needing some attention.

The other could be as simple as a TRV which has been installed on the wrong end of a radiator. Do you have TRV's fitted (thermostatic valves on radiators), like an adjuster with numbers on it? If installed on the wrong end, when the room gets up to temperature they can begin vibrating. Turn it up or down a little and it will stop making the noise.

Thanks, but why would it start now, after years of being fine? And as per separate issue, bit of a coincidence that they both go at once? BTW the heating thing happened only once, the tap is constantly shuddering when hot open just slightly
Thanks all

All faults have to start at some time :-)

Fit a new washer to the tap and it will probably fix that problem.

Your noisy heating has probably happened now, because you have only just (like us) begun to use your heating system in earnest.

If it's the washer, why does it only happen when the boiler is on?

Do you have 1/4 turn taps? If one or more are failing, then this could be your noise. When you open the tap do any others start to run, drip, trickle?
