maintenance necessary?

Recently the "check engine" light came on in my 1998 Ford Contour. I was told that the intake gaskets were leaking, causing a bad fuel/air ratio and that to fix it would cost $421.79. Additionally, during their routine maintenance check, it was discovered that the fuel injectors would need to be flushed as well as the induction thrust (i think this is what it was called??) and the spark plugs needed to be replaced. The total for all maintenance would be $877.13.

I am rather uninformed about cars and therefore tend to be at the mercy of mechanics -- In the attempt to educate myself, I ask the group... can any experts out there tell me if these procedures are necessary and/or reasonably priced? Is this a case of spend money now to prevent having to spend more money in the future on a larger problem?

Thanks so much for any advice!
