Hi everyone

After some advice of those in the know if possible.

We have converted the garage at home and the builders have installed a bay window that’s supposed to be matching to the rest which are mahogany.

We knew the colour would be rosewood so slightly a different shade on the casing but what we were not expecting was a different colour lead and motif (flower in different shade) as well as actual smaller windows (in width.)

Is it the case that getting matching windows are difficult due to the way they are manufactured in current times?

We know at the least the colour of the glass should be a better match (as previously had matches for other windows from cloudy to clear) but are we within our rights to pull the builder up about the sizes (widths) of the windows not matching?

Sorry the pictures are not great but hopefully shows the difference in Payne widths.

Are you saying the two end windows are smaller in width and height? They have to be because they're openers and is a frame within a frame, other than fitting dummy openers in the middle 2 to make all 4 the same size then that's how it's always going to look

the window width is dictated by the structural opening -did the builder work from supplied architects drawings

it looks to me that the new bay is much taller, Im not sure about width, hard to tell

The only way of getting a match wouldve been getting the same window manufacturer to do the window as the original -the decorative lead motif and detail is specific to a manufacturer and whoever made the new window probably gets the glass from a double glazing manufacturer who uses a different supplier.

regarding lead colour, generally there a 3 options: natural lead, pre aged lead or a bronzed lead which is coated

do you know what your originals are?

Do the original windows have modern standard 28mm glazing ? If not they will have smaller dimensions to accommodate a narrower glazing .

The original ' motif ' is a bevel, and looks like it was yellow ( ish ) , and the new clear?. Maybe the yellow is no longer available as some decorative glass products have ceased production. If we had made these and the bevels weren't available anymore , we would have suggested a yellow film under the bevel to replicate colour as close as possible. It looks to me like the surveyor never spotted the coloured bevel ( flowery motif ). As goes lead, there are several types of coated ( bronze /gold /white /black /), aged or natural. Natural lead will appear shiny to start but after a few weeks/months will start to naturally age and dull down to a grey. As it does start to naturally age , you could get ' runs ' from the lead , which I strongly advise wiping off , and is all.part of the natural aging process
