mdf

frances, can you be more explicit. In what way do you mean "look like wood"?
 
To get a wood effect you have a few choices, veneer one side of the mdf (the side that will be visible) with real wood, this will give the best effect. Veneer with plastic which has a wood print on it or use one of these paint finishes that has a woodgrain effect.

It all depend what francesstaines want to do,you can get Timberboard 18mm thickness up to 600 wide to 2050mm high in real wood,available from Wickes
 
If its staying inside you could paint and grain it. :D wonderful product available at any B&Q etc... Even i can use it and decorating is not my strong point :wink:
