many thanks in advance to any help anyone can offer me

Does it have on-board graphics. If so, some of that memory is used there. Where are you getting the "available memory" information from? What version of Windows? What is the model name (apart from the 410 bit), ie., etower, emonster etc?

sorry, it has a 128mb graphics card that i put in last year. its running xp home sp2, its an emachines 410 (thats all it say's on the front). i'm getting available memory info from start> all programs> accesories> system tools> system information. in system info it tells me manufac: emachines, model: imperial

could it be my system cache? in task manager its saying cache is roughly 474488k. does that sound excessivly high or about right?

When your system is operating memory is being used by the operating system and any applications which are active - the available memory is whats left (unused) of your physical memory - must, therefore, be less than the physical memory. If physical memory becomes used up, then some contents are swapped to virtual memory - i.e. hard disk, but access times are much longer.
