You'll have noticed i'm playing with a thermal store, the added volume (direct not indirect) means my existing header tank won't be big enough- need about 60 litres to make the 10%
I happen to have lurking in the back garden a very fetching avocado metal bath, its been waiting in the scrap pile for a couple of years now.
The only thing not metal in it is the plug (which won't be needed in my cunning masterplan), can anyone think of a good reason why i can't use this as my header tank?
The size is perfect- loft is low headroom but got a massive hatch so it'll go in. I'll need to fab a cover for it- grp will be favourite, got some left over mat & resin from doing the bay window. I'll also have to lash something up to fit the ballvalve to- thinking 4 x 2 clamped across the top of the bath, ply fixed to that & drilled for ball valve - its on a cranked arm, ply won't be in the water. Overflow out the overflow. Feed out the plughole- think its 1.5" so female iron to 28mm will do lovely, can't think of a neat way of getting feed above the bottom of the bath (apart from milling out the stop on the iron so 28mm will go through).
Anything i've forgotten or overlooked? If anyone has a link to a cheap 60 litre plus tank i'll be very grateful, the only ones i can find are well over the £100 mark and cash is a bit tight at the mo (time, however, is plentiful).

Ta both- weight would be an issue if i filled it but i'm not going to, ball valve bodge will allow me to set level wherever i want. But of course if the ball valve fails then it would get a bit weighty....good one. Didn't really want to cut a hole lower for the overflow cos hard work & corrosion point but might have to...

Got to be hundreds if not thousands of combi conversion installs going on up and down the country. Someone let him have an old cold water cistern.

Thats not a bad call as it goes, i'll stick a post up on Freecycle. Trouble is i think most of the tanks coming out are either plastic from the 70s or too big to get out the loft hatch so either get left there or cut up.

Buy an old direct hot water cylinder of the local scrap merchants and cut it down to the capacity you need.
I was looking at my old indirect cylinder with this in mind but was a bit worried about how weak it would be if i took the top off. Could always put it on a pallette with struts round it to keep its shape....good plan about scrappie, got a pile of lead i've been tripping over, little run down & see what they've got :)
