so is there a way of viewing my competitors metatags? reason i want to is to see what they are using to get above me on google etc.

thanks will have a look.

the real issue is the SEO on my own site is crap, employed a company to do the work, 3 weeks and all they have managed is a 2 page website with links to my own!! and their effort isn't working either no traffic through it except me and a customer who has looked at it!

what is your website url?

who is you website hosted with?

sometimes they have some tools included with their package to get people to it.

What you need to do is look at the google page where it tells you what will get you rated well.

Now changes you make will typically only start working 3wks-3months from chaging and it will need regular attention and expansion.

Firstly you need to start getting links to your website from other websites. Which means you need to get on free listings at as many websites as you can. This will often have to be done by you or your employees. Places like applegate and linkedin and yell and any other internet directory. Also I am not sure what type of business you are doing but I done a public sevice website the other month and councils and gov websites were happy to link to me if I provided links back to them.

Once your site starts getting links from reputable sites then the bots.... (that the programs that scan websites) will start visitiing and indexing your site. You can probably see their activity from your control panel.

These bots... (googlebots) will usually scan a percentage of your page about 100 words or so. They will reference the words in your page for repetition and usage and they cross reference these with meta tags and if they all match they will assume the content and the meta tags are genuine.

What wont work is if you use meta tags then use a white font on a white background and recopy your tags onto your page. Infact this will harm your page.

This will then slowly get you up the rankings in the google (others available) search rankings. Once you website starts rolling in the pounds then maybe take up some pay per cli ck advertising or something similar.

If you want to view your oponents website you can use firefox from mozilla and view the source code of their site which will show all meta info.

hope this helps

Rob

thanks

my own site is gasregd.com and .co.uk had been on page 1 of google for sometime but has slipped badly.

the new one set up by the muppets plumberservicessouthampton.co.uk

i'm a gasman predominately hence the id on here and i also do electrics, plumbing and solar hot water.

the meta tags you use on gasregd.com are

gas engineer gas installer electrician solar plumber sparks

the .co.uk is going to a holding page...

the plumber services one has

<meta name="google-site-verification" content="P9TAL0yYvPd05TYkuh1RzsdFKUFRX2SbCuzVFbRMVQk" />
<meta name="alexaVerifyID" content="rB3cofeY2QI1HjXEzmDRrvSkpF4" />
<title>Dereham Services > Electrician Southampton > Electrician New Forest</title>
<meta name="description" content=" Dereham Services is a professional plumber and electrical company with a vast range of experience and knowledge covering Southampton, New Forest, Bournemouth and Poole, Specialising in Electrician Southampton, Electrician New Forest. "/>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-UK">
<meta name="keywords" content="Electrician Southampton, Electrician New Forest, Plumber Southampton, Plumber New Forest" />

--------

I would stick with one address or the other and just webforward. unless they are both hosted on the same server. as you can often monitor page views from the control panels.

the plumber services one has the better tags on it. but they may not be directly linked from the gasregd pages too.

Rob

interesting! had not looked at .co.uk which should go direct to .com will have a go at that first
as you see i need help...... :lol:
thanks

Rob

they aren't, the plu........hampton one is set up as a seperate site! not what i wanted! i just want my own site optimised to get the soton traffic! too simple i suppose!

easiest way is to go to the home page then click on VIEW in the browser menu, then SOURCE, you can then see that pages code.

By the way search engines do still use metatags, even Google recommend you include them in their site optimisation help pages
