Multinational forced to pay some tax

So, a man who is at least 72 years old earning £200k. Are there many of those about?

We don't know how much of his money motorbiking declared as salary and paid NI on, and how much he took as dividends or other schemes.

Maybe he is a landlord or day trader.

In the true sense of the word, the world has never and will never be 'fair' for everyone whether referring to taxes or anything else. It becomes a cyclical debate, on taxes the top earners will assert they contribute more than their fare share to the pot, middle earners will assert they get taxed too much, lower earners most likely asserting the same. I'm using a broad brush of course. Politicians will assert taxing the (genuinely) rich more will lead to them not investing in business and the economy. etc etc.

A lot of the right things are said by politicians and business, however the actions thereafter rarely live up to the rhetoric.
But that doesn't mean it can't be made better (system), if not fairer.

Just accepting that that is the system is not really an answer.

And as I said, I know it won't change whilst those that benefit the most are in charge of the rules.

As an aside, the big 4(possibly5 ) accountancy firms are involved in writing the new tax rules after each Government announcement on changes. Ideally placed to understand the very rules they can exploit for those that can afford their services.

I note you avoided answering this:

“I do have a problem with lower earners not being able to afford enough heat and enough food”

I presume you didn’t answer as you don’t have a problem with it
Let them eat cake, rings a bell.

Somebody else who was far removed from daily issues affecting many.

Let's also not forget about the very rich, that don't work, but seem to manage ok

Oh I see we are worrying about how much tax other people pay, while at the same time telling people to MYOB when asked about theirs.

That's not what I'm saying. However what I'm guaranteeing is we could come back a 100 years from now and there will still be every single extreme we see today in a financial sense between the very poor, very rich and every flavour between.

There will always be a divide.

It's the size of the divide that needs to change.

Fairer is not the same as fair.

Doing nothing just helps the divide become greater, and I for 1 hate to see us accelerating back towards victorian and earlier times.

here is a good example, loads of detail

I couldn't see how much she earns gross, but I was able to reverse engineer it from her monthly outgoings.. She appears to be earning £30k per year. A bit of googling suggests she's on £15-16p/h. She is already qualified to teach first aid and could obtain additional necessary qualification very easily.

A first aid course costs £60-120 - 10-15 people per class. so let's assume £900 per class. She does this 1-2 day per months and increases her income by min 25%. allowing for costs (village hall, second hand resus doll, expired kit).

She can do specialist classes and earn more money. She might want to work for an existing provider first and gains some experience. The rate of pay is twice as much per hour as she currently earns.

There will always be extremes, whats important is that we can work towards reducing it

But some countries are less extreme than others

wealth inequality is extremely bad in the U.K.

The reason is because we have a weak political system that allows the wealthy to influence policy so that they keep their wealth whilst keeping the poor, poor.

recent Tory policy: NI tax cuts to try and buy voters which is partly being paid by cuts to benefits.

Good luck on that one, folk are still waiting on trickle down economics to kick in ;)

Nowhere have I asserted nothing should be done.

On a kind of related subject (although tenuous) what do you think will happen if humankind starts to colonise other planets in decades/centuries to come? Do you think they'll be utopian planets of fairness? Or is it more likely they'll reflect the current socioeconomic earth model? Rich, poor, those with, those without, those claiming more land, those with no land, power, greed, corruption.

I know what one I'd place my bet on ...

That those with the most money make the rules?

I'm with you on that
