I have a scratchy knob! ;)
Please see photo.
Can it be restored?
What's the best / safest thing to try?
Wire wool?
Brasso?
T-cut?
other?
Thanks in advance.

It's probably lacquered - and the lacquer that is scratched.

You may be able to polish off the scratches, or remove the lacquer and polish the knob, then re lacquer if you want

thanks - I'll give that a try - if it doesn't work then £25-35 for a new one.

Are you married..................?

As it looks like damage from a wedding ring .

Andy
Yes could be. I've just bought it. Possibly a female driver before me. The rest of the car is in immaculate condition (or very well repaired). I'll try polishing it off or replacing it if that doesn't work.

I gave up. It was too damaged to repair. :(
Tried Silvo, T-cut, car repair kit (super fine sandpaper etc.). Got rid of most of the scratches but showed up the copper-coloured layer underneath.

Found a fake replacement on eBay for £24.

And... I just worked out that I don't hold the gear stick that way, so must've been some weirdo / freak-handed person who had it before me. j/k. ;)
But strange that the leather steering wheel is in fab condition.

I doubt if it's more than a microscopic layer of copper but the metal below might be presentable. I'm guessing the knob pulls off but it will be hard to shift.

Maybe the female owner wore a ring on another finger or her thumb ? Either way I'd not let her loose on my knob....

I pulled the knob off easily with a firm wiggle and a tug (thanks to youtube) ;)
Shiny new knob ordered from eBay (plus some alloy brake and clutch pedal covers as the brake pedal was worn down on one corner; but can't find an alloy accelerator pedal cover anywhere). :/

You seem to have rubbed your knob to within an inch of its life, id get a new one.:D
A new one's been ordered. I always look after my knob!
This one belonged to somebody else... I'm guessing he's automobilious-infertile if he abuses his knobs like that.
