Hi- we currently have a windowless bathroom on the first floor. We are thinking of putting in a new window for a little light / ventilation etc. The house is a detached but the houses are built closely so there is about a metre and a half between the side wall of our house and next door’s side wall - identical houses. The bathroom in question is in the middle of this side wall , so a new window would just look onto next door’s side wall. They are all completely windowless walls so wouldn’t be looking in on any of their rooms. Below the proposed window is our walkthrough to the garden from the front. Would this be allowed? Any restrictions that anyone can tell me? Thanks so much.

Your bathroom window should be obscure glass anyway . As for restrictions you might want to upload a photo of the area you want your windows. It gives us a better idea.

Ok, so if I’ve got this right proposed window above bath left hand side as we look at pictures. There will be tile damage ,new reveals and some reinforcement across the top of the window it’s awkward but doable. It’s a shame really because you could have put one were the extractor is but I think the soil stack might run down the same area. Anyway there are no issues with regards bc. You might want to save some money and look for a brand new mismeasure normally less than half price and cut the hole out accordingly. Hope this helps.

Agree about the fixed shut, presumably to avoid trespassing on the neighbour's land when it's open.

I'd assume a bathroom window would be less than 1m² in most cases though

Yes, I agree ,if it is less than 1m2 ok providing no other unprotected areas in that wall ( over 1m2 and fixed shut wouldn't be any good for ventilation anyway)
Just do it, it's extremely unlikely anyone would ever say anything or even notice.
If you go along with your neighbour let them know.
They'll tell you they don't care as there's just a wall there.
Had same situation with a customer and looking around the area a lot of people had done that.

Good evening Char, as my post earlier you can fit up to 1000 x 1000mm however to comply with fire regs you need a sprinkler system installed because of the boundary line. Considering it’s a bathroom window access to water to provide said system should be straight forward. A lot of rules and regs have changed due to Grenfell which is good thing in a way, better safe than sorry. Ps it does allow you to have a bigger window though.

I know that’s why when you mentioned the fire regs in England I’d double check, thanks. I lot of changes in building works regarding new fire regs some I’d come across and some like this I haven’t.
