New, old, bike ? Seat post

Just been given an old bicycle, well not that old a ‘Scott sportster ‘ replacing brakes and inner tubes which is simple enough but it’s missing a seat and seat post.
The problem I have is the post diameter , many different sizes out there and with a tape measure it’s only a guesstimate of around 26mm.
Any suggestions on how to find correct size? Don’t have access to a vernier gauge .
 
Just measure the hole in the seat tube with a ruler. If you’re unsure, get a post slightly smaller and then correct it with some seat post shims. Search Amazon for

You’ll have to measure it then. Have you got any spade wood bits you can try in the tube for size? If not, only other option I can think of would be to take it to a bike shop and get them to measure it.
 
I have a cheapo digital vernier gauge, only cost about £6 off ebay, probably only accurate to within about 0.1mm probably but just fine for these kinds of measurements when super accuracy is not required. Surprising just how much I've used it over the years.

Sounds like you have hot the correct size its maximum width is 26 mm what more do you need?
 
Don’t know it’s correct , could be 25.8, 26, 26.2,26.4 hard to be accurate .

Bike seats aren't sold with precise measurements so 26 mm will be OK if you are actually capable of taking an accurate measurement

It’s the bike seat post, which are an exact size and in increments of .2 mm. There are dozens of sizes.
 
Sorted now , found a helpfull bike shop withing reach of my old legs and found the seat post to be 26.8 , not a common size but have ordered online.
