Hi all,

Looking to install a small washroom in the first floor of my house. There is a single bathroom on the ground floor of the property underneath the stair. Wondering how best to connect in to existing drainage. Conscious that Regs state max. 6m for toilet and 3/4m for basin/shower. Without a new SVP this won't be possible and I don't really have the money to dig out a new trench at this time.

Have attached a rudimentary plan and diagram of one possible route.

Potential to install a AAV/Stub stack if this helps?

Any advice would be helpful. Let me know if any clever ideas.

Thanks,

Jack

Can you even get a decent fall on that run across the house? 4" pipework is always the best option, but if finances dont permit a new drainage run at this stage, then I suspect a Macerator is the only option, if all other avenues have been exhausted. However, be aware these must be treated with respect, or it'll soon give you a headache.

Only things that should go down the WC are the 3 P's, pee, poo and paper, and avoid washing long hair in the shower, as this can jam a macerator.

Thanks Hugh.

Hunch is to avoid a macerator if possible as I know they're prone to failure.

Need to rip up a couple of floorboards to see what void is available but doubt I'll get a 2 degree fall across that 4.5m span. Suspect 150mm joists so may get a 50mm fall... Or could drop some boxing in corner of ceiling below.

Separate from the length, are there issues with connecting sink and shower to the waste pipe as shown?

Thanks again.

Jack

Do not fit Saniflo..It WILL block.

Yep - that's as I suspected. Thanks durhamplumber.

Any thoughts on the other points raised?

If you can achieve a sensible fall on 110mm pipework over that distance, then I'd be inclined to say go for it. You want around a 1:40 as a rule of thumb, I'd be cautious about dropping to too shallow a fall or you may find solids are sitting in the pipework, eventually giving you issues... Fit access points, for this reason, in case of any problems, and preferably externally!

If this can be sensibly achieved, then bring the 110mm pipework up alongside the WC or in the corner, terminate in an AAV above basin spillover lever. Connect basin and shower as required, preferably into the top of the 110mm.

Thanks for all the comments.

Thinking of renting out rooms as a holiday let and can't be sure what people would put down the loo so going to avoid a Saniflo.

With regards to the proposed AAV position Hugh. The corner by the sink best?

Agree if you are renting the room out then you don`t want any form of pump or macerator in it.

Avoid the Macerator, you'll soon regret it. Women and those things are never a good combination, and those abusing it will probably be well gone by the following week when it jams up....

Bring soil pipe up wherever is convenient, but the corner is usually favourite to allow ease of boxing in.
