Hello.

I am in the process of putting some floor joists in.
Noggins...is there anything structurally different between solid block noggins of 8x2 or using herimbone? Also, is there a general rule of thumb for how frequently you need them?

Thank you

Herringbone is better for services and air flow where needed over solid nogs so no structural adv and rule of thumb spacing is every 2m max

As a DIYer... I typically tray and put one line of noggins down the middle of the floor from one side of the room to the other.
Was very effective in reducing floor movement.
Could not and cannot tell difference between solid or metal herringbone straps.
Use solid when tight on cash, and herringbone when have more time or utilities in way.
But had to slightly notch top and bottom of beam to put in metal herringbone to make flat surface for floor boards and plasterboard ceiling.
Toolstaion shows a good image that shows the issue.

You will be grateful for herringbone when you have to put in or change services.

Blup

Guidance according to TRADA tables is none at 2.5m span, 1 at centre on 2.5-4.5m span and over 4.5m one at at 1/3 and 2/3 span
