Oak mantelpiece

Anyone got any tips on securing an oak beam to a fake stud-wall chimney breast?

It's going to stick out about 15cm and needs to be held securely so it can take a bit of weight, but given the price of timber I don't want to have to order a larger piece than necessary just to have half of it hidden inside the stud wall!

Just wondered if there was a "standard" way to do it!
 
Depends on how the timber frame has been constructed ?, easy to screw thru stud from inside to secure mantle before plaster boarding .
I had half brick on my last faux fireplace , this supported the weight and then plasterboard around it and skimmed back to timber.

Offset pegs hold mine in place. Drill and rawl plug into the wall, drill theoak mantlepiece, turn the offset plugs so that the mantle piece is a snug fit.

Brilliant, two good ideas there!

When you use your fixings aim to have them in the top quarter of the thickness of the mantle. The mantle is a lever when there is weight on it, and the bottom edge corner is the fulcrum. You want the distance from the fulcrum to the fixing to be as long as possible.
