looks like an old TLX (2203 maybe), there were several versions of the same stat

That wiring couldnt be more simple, a very basic early thermostat

There are 2 cables attached with old red, black and earth wires, plus one single red wire. The heating engineer couldn't understand why there is 2 cables. So I figured that as it was working fine before I managed to break it, the easiest thing is to replace with the same and connect to the same. Just want to know which model.

FFS. Live, Neutral, Earth, and switched live.... in no particular order.
He is no fookin Heating Engineer if he can't figure that !!
terminal 1 = demand (power to motorised valve to turn it on )
terminal 2 = satisfied (power to motorised valve to turn it back off)
terminal 3 = common (live in )
terminal 4 = neutral
earth went onto metal plate at back of it

good chance the motorised valves have been changed at some point to spring return and the satisfied wire is no longer required

The full reference will be on the wiring diagram inside the case. This would also have identified the wiring.
Any number of changeover thermostats would be a suitable replacement, Honeywell, Drayton, etc.
