I live in a remote area where Broadband is not available. I have heard of a download from www.onspeed.com which is claimed to make a dial-up work 5 times faster. Does anyone know if this works OK or is it a con?

Not tried it, but as it's based on a compression system, the speed will depend upon the type of data you are sending. If the file is text based, it will compress well, and you should see some benefit. If it's a binary type file, it's probably compressed as much as it can be and so it will download at the same speed.

At the end of the day, it costs only £25 a year.

With broadband prices dropping all the time, I suspect you will be able to get some form before too long. Satellite broadband, although still relatively expensive, will soon be within everyones budget.

I tried it for a few months. Text does download a bit quicker. As for images you can choose how much compression to apply. The more compression the quicker they load - but the lower the quality. I now use broadband, but even if I went back to Dial-up I wouldn't use it again as I didn't feel it gave enough of an advantage as it only speeds up certain file types. It WON'T speed up files that you download, only what is displayed on the monitor.

So the Onspeed Servers recieve the data requested, compress it then send to you ...
I would be interested to see how they back up the '..As fast as BB statement ... '

At the moment we have dedicated algorithms for:
Photo-realistic images (e.g., JPEG, PNG, GIF, and BMP)
Line Art and Drawings (e.g., GIF, BMP)
Animated objects (GIF)
HTML objects
Text, etc
Office Documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Macromedia Flash

Any data elements that we do not have a dedicated algorithm for gets compressed using a generic compression algorithm. This ensures that we can still get a 20-30% speed increase on these elements.
I wonder.
Sounds like a bit of 'Tony baloney' :D
:?

Having tried both, OnSpeed is no-where near as fast as broadband (512) in my opinion.

I just found out about this piece of software today when advertised in the paper and it seemed too good to be true. Unable to get broadband here also but I also feared it might be a con so thought I would start a thread on here, until I seen fido's post.

The majority of my surfing does include text files and forums similiar to this, surely I must be at an advantage to this pieve of kit?. I havent looked at the link fido posted but I will go just now, surely they have a trial basis before buying for the year (just like every other piece of decent software available on the net). My guess is if it does not then they are surely convinced we would not buy it after a trial basis which would confirm all of your negative comments on it.
