I have a basic FAAC 402 gate opener kit, the control board only allows open function and the gateway will close after 30 sec. I'm looking to upgrade the control board to a newer version that allows both open and close.

Just wondering if there's any options to allow the control of open/close over internet from smart phones. Either a function of the control board or with additional smart home/home automation kits?

Most gate controls have different logic settings which will open and close the gate.
Open pause close after timer
Open then close after input from device etc
You need to have the correct safety devices to prevent any damage to vehicles/personnel injury by gate closing/opening onto person's.
Using a remote device like gsm unit/app can come with problems .
What would happen if you opened the gate and it closed and then damage or imprisoned someone ?
Check your logic setting on your controller it may do what you want
Be careful !

As above and the control board is not a 402 , it could be a 452 MPS or other depending on age !

I would say safety is the stumbling block, even professional gate installers have come foul of the health and safety rules with massive fines being given. The same with garage doors, the rules are now so strict, personally I would not touch an automatic gate or door, seem to remember it's a bit like gas safe where you need to register and show you have the training.

I had someone came to fix the sensors and confirmed my board does not have the close function. but you are right I was also advised to give it a full safety check - will take the cost into consideration too.

sorry I meant the opener is FAAC 402, not the board, I can't remember what board I have, will have to open the box to check.

If the gate system was fitted by the previous owner, am I liable to get it safety certificated or updated to the standard?

This BBC report on two deaths high lights the problems. It is a 2010 report so likely by now some new rules are in place.
HSE on BBC website said:
HSE also advised those in control of the maintenance of electric gates to regularly review their risk assessments, taking account of or any changes to the operating conditions or environment.
You are one of those in control of the maintenance as the new owner, unless you in turn take out a maintenance contract, as electrical engineer I would often take out maintenance contracts to ensure my back was covered, lifts, escalators, and vending machines nearly always were under a maintenance contract.
