I am looking for a generic oven lamp housing to fit inside a chimney approx 1.2 meters above the grate.

All housings I can find are specific to a cooking oven and are made to fit into a molded space in the oven lining.

I want something I can surface mount inside the brick chimney.

Any ideas appreciated.

Depending on what sort of heat will be expected in the area you want to mount it, can you not get one that's made to fit a moulding in an oven wall and simply mount it into the lid of a surface box?
As I say, you will have to consider if it will be too hot for the mounting box first.

So if I buy this, what sort of "surface box" could I use to attach it?

Or could I just let it hang from the cable?

If I leave a couple of inches of heat resistant wire in chimney breast and attach the above lamp to it. Would it be OK to just leave lamp hanging from cable without seciring it? Fire is over 1M below.

OK. What is alternative to leaving it hanging?

I am looking to put in 40W bulb.

I'd suggest any lighting above a stove should be supplied from a (remote) 12v selv transformer. In that case you could just leave some lamps hanging. That's what I did, 2x 12v 10w lamps lights it up perfectly

Why do you want to put a light in a chimney? It’s just going to get covered in soot and other combustion products...

what temperature do you predict. Heat resistant cable is only about 80 degree, Tri rated about 90 degrees, you may need higher more specialist cable

Are your 10W lamps heat proof?
They're halogen lamps that run at crazy temperatures themselves, the temperature above the stove is nothing in comparison

Edit: hang on, I've just re-read your original post, these are going *inside* a chimney? And above what, an open fire? Putting lights in the space outside of the chimney above a log burner is doable but going by what you seem to be asking, your idea probably isn't

This is what is above my stove, tucked behind the arch opening IMG_20190327_094550-1-1.jpg

Quite so. Many moons ago I did once see it done, above a large open fire, in a hotel - but when my curiosity got the better of me such that I started looking and asking questions, it transpired that it was all done with 'fibreoptics', such that nothing but glass (and certainly nothing electrical) was anywhere near the flames and heat above the fire.

Kind Regards, John

Does that conform to the regs :)
Despite it looking a bit questionable, I'm pretty sure it does. Even if it doesn't, I know it's 100% safe and it's my own house. It's fed from a selv (non mains referenced) transformer and the cable is rated to operate at 180°C! The guys who installed the stove were perfectly happy with it too.
