@Kat1988 please take another pic, standing back to show the whole wall from ceiling to floor. Include something to show scale, and measure some of the marks to see if they are brick-sized rectangles.
If it is a chimneybreast it needs to be ventilated or the flue will be damp inside from condensation.

Sometimes, when plastering, the bonding coat has a series of wavy lines scratched on it before applying the finish plaster, but the lines don't look 'natural' enough to be that.

Very strange. It could be a caulk someones used, or a bonding gun or someone has filled cracks at some point. Although the pattern doesn't seem to suggest any of those. As said above, some zinsser should solve it!
At a guess... perhaps there was a mirror that was glued to the wall at some point. The marks being the caulk/sealant.
I too would recommend Zinsser BIN. Oh, and buy some household ammonia to clean the brush with.

We found a human skeleton lodged in our chimney breast. Only identifying object was a medallion hanging round its neck. Turned out to be the 1938 hide and seek champion........
Ha ha.
Things like that actually have happened in the past, when a burglar has dropped down the chimney only to find the fireplace blocked up.
