I would like to install and paint a pegboard white. The pegboard hasn't arrived yet, but I think it is made of hardboard. Is spray paint OK? Do I need to prime it first?

I've seen some suggest priming with a car priming spray. Is that OK (I thought car primer would be for metal)?

Thank you.

I did a sheet years ago - I think I just used emulsion and a small roller.
Some holes WILL clog and need opening back up.

Maybe something like a zinzer product might be better? Then either spray or roller paint

You really need to use an MDF primer, enamel rather than acrylic based......it will soak up like a sponge.
I would imagine a spray aerosol is available, and the instructions should recommend a compatible top coat.

a zinzer product
Looks like Screwfix do stock it, so I might be able to get it delivered. And I emailed Tor Coatings and they confirmed it can be used on hardboard.

enamel rather than acrylic
OK, I had to look up the difference between these (thanks for keeping it simple), and I now understand why acrylic is not suitable on hardboard. Halfords do an enamel primer and enamel white spray paint.

Thank you both very much for your help.
