HI,

My staircase bannister is currently white gloss and very old looking. Its got layers of gloss from over the years. I would like to give it a dark wood effect. Is there any paint available to paint over the gloss without having to remove it the old gloss or any trick?

Thanks
Sid

I had the same problem a few years ago, except I spent ages stripping the paint off - I found some special two coat paint which produced a wood effect finish, but the effect was difficult to achieve and even if I got it right, it looked quite naff. Since then I stripped it again and just painted it white, but stripped the pine handrail with a wire brush and varnished it, it now looks OK, and the handrail has a oak look and feel to it.

Only way is to use paint stripper and remove all old paint and once off, clean handrail and sand down and then apply your dark woodstain/varnish.
Nitromors is the way to go
