I suspect their objective was purely taking hostages. Let's not ignore the fact that it wasn't only Hamas fighters. There were other groups involved. Who they were exactly is not clear.
It's understandable, but not excusable, that revenge took a horrendous turn.
Revenge now by the Israelis on the populatuion of Gaza (which has continued for decades on Gaza and the West Bank) is no less excusable, nor has it ever been.
