I did use a geo-fabric (water permiable) under a gravel fella once, but that was on customer insistence.

Essential where there are individual soft pockets (pipe runs, natural depressions) of ground etc. A complete nightmare for future maintenance. No need for decent compact virgin ground.
Whilst gravel drives are low end, they do make for ideal surfaces to reinstate should you wish to dig a hole or a trench. That is until you come across geo-fabric!What future maintenance are you thinking of?
