Petrolheads !!

We, and a dozen other cars containing similarly incredulous drivers, are being given a virtual police escort at sometimes over 100mph, and the world is ecstatic.

I bl**dy love Italy! I am sure that there are a lot of British traffic policemen who would LOVE to be involved in this sort of thing, but it would be more than their job is worth to allow motorists to drive at over 100... however in Italy that isn't necessarily too quick, the speed limit on some motorways is 95mph!

They mention at the start the lack of barriers. Italian GTs of that era were usually right-hand-drive, to allow the driver to better judge the edge of the road!

Anyone who hasn't driven in Italy, I thoroughly recommend it. Every journey is fun. Driving a narrow hire-car round there is like a computer game. It is definitely more dangerous as you take more risk, but on the positive side people do seem to be more aware of you on the roads and they don't get upset if you overtake (how many times have you been overtaking a dawdler on a country lane who then puts his foot down to try and stop you getting past?) In fact, most are very helpful and move over to give you room to get past!

I wouldn't take my own car though...

I would love to have a go at the Mille Miglia: wonder if I can get sponsorship from my company? :D
