I was accerating onto the M25 when I had a sudden engine failure. The engine went from running very smoothly to rattling very loudly and losing power. When I reached the hard shoulder I realised the engine was still idling very quietly as usual. Attempting to pull away the loud rattle returned. My local garage, who are usually very good, have failed to find the problem.

Anyone seen this problem before with one of these engines.

Low engine oil level?
Or if you have a high mileage car, it may well be trying to run on the excessive fumes from the sump, so ask them to vent the sump to the outside of the engine to see if the problem changes. Usually if it is sump fumes you tent to loose control of engine revs, has this happened?

Any chance you’d just filled up with fuel? Haven’t put petrol in it have you?

Those engines are usually bombproof but the crankshaft pulley can fail at high mileage causing the auxiliary belt to run unevenly - that can make a clatter, but not usually at tickover. Watch the tensioner at tickover and see if its jumping up and down, keep watching while the engine is revved.

Thanks for your replies but it is none of those things. Cambelt has been checked and is correct (replaced 6 months ago). Injectors checked and OK. Problem seems to be worse - the idle is now rough not quiet and smooth any more. Very responsive engine until the sudden failure (104,000 miles on the clock). Had the car from new (52 plate) and loved driving it. Always been well maintained.

I have just had a 110 hp version of this engine go to very low power and black smoke. It had little or no turbo boost, I disconnected the air intake pipe across the top of the engine, put my hand over the engine end and it nearly stopped the engine so no leaks there, I felt the pipe from the intercooler and there was a light draft but no real pressure, all of a sudden when the engine was revving it started blasting out air, I reconnected it and it drove fine.

I suspect the problem is with the exhaust, maybe the cat has collapsed and is blocking it, I have ordered one so should know soon. Mine didn't make any extraneous noises though just lost power. Yours doesn't have the intercooler pipe though as its the 90 hp engine. I have been running these engines in the 406 for nearly 10 years, never had a real problem until now.

I have replaced a camshaft on an XUD9.....the vacuum pump on the end had seized and that cracked the cam.
Surely not  But Id whip the rocker cover off just for a look see.....that rattle troubles me!
John :)

Can you throw a video up of the engine running?
U-Tube first then post he link on here ..........

Thanks for the posts.

Peter. No significant smoke. A new catalyst was fitted for the MOT a month ago and I did initially wonder if it had failed when the engine was ticking over. Now the rattle seems to have got harsher and seems to be coming from near the top of the engine. ie seems to be a purely mechanical problem.

I intend to have the rocker cover off and check but have to wait for a dry day

Sorry, not into fancy phones etc so unable to post video.

When the incident happened it was quite brutal, the nose dipped and there was a significant reduction in speed before I got the clutch down and coasted to the hard shoulder. I was surprised the engine was still running when I stopped.

Hell, this sounds like the engine is seizing up, if it's decelerating like you say.
Were you low in coolant?
I'd like to see a compression check on this engine, but they are strong - so long as there's oil in
John :)

John, All the fluids are OK.

The only time I have heard an engine behave like mine initially did was in Canada this summer. I had helped my son rebuild his Kawasaki engine. Started it up and let it idle for 2-3 minutes to let the fluids stabilise. He then blipped the throttle - like a bag of nails. Found the timing chain was one tooth out - hence why I had the cambelt timing checked. Injector failure will apparently do the same thing. That the symptoms have changed would seem to suggest more damage is being done by reving the engine to try and find out what the problem is.

No worries about the video, just an idea.
And you cant change the noise with the clutch pedal?
.

This surprises me.
