We are looking at repairing our balcony and some planks need replacement. One problem is we cannot identify the type of wood.

I have attached some photos. Can anyone assist?

The wood appears untreated and is a shade of grey (after natural weathering).

Failing anyone being able to identify it by the photos, how would I go about finding the type? Or what is a suitable alternative?

Both, but primarily the balcony flooring.

I have been advised it may be cedar, that would make me assume western red cedar. However I know nothing about wood so am only speculating and not sure if this is a generic or specific term. (?)

How about these?

Tropical hardwood, could be anything.

Iroko is one of the more common ones used for decking.

Why do boards need replacement?

Find marina pontoon suppliers/spare parts sellers. You should be able to get the kind of stuff they surface their pontoons with, ready 'treaded' with grooves; or use em upside down. Worth a look.
