Hi all,

Been having a strange whining/humming noise coming from my boiler. (Combi boiler - Ferroli i25). When the system is on and all radiators are on full heat it works perfectly, however when one is turned down the boiler makes a fairly loud vibrating/whining/straining noise, and when that radiator is turned back on it's back to quiet again.

Had a plumber round that suggests it could be dirt in the system, and mentioned the diverter valve or "plate" could have dirt inside and that would be the fix - to replace the diverter valve, and clean out the "plate" whilst he's there to remove dirt from the system.

Does this sound correct, and if so what should i be expecting from price?

Thanks in advance

when you say "one is turned down " do you mean a specific one or any one of them ?

Any of them - as soon as one is turned down the noise happens

ISTR diverter valves are simply a rubber flap inside.
Taking them apart and cleaning them has worked for me in the past so may not need expensive replacing.

When you turn down a rad and it starts making the noise, completely close that rad , does the noise then stop ?

post pics of what Thermostatic rad valves you have

Hi - these ones are the ones we have

Interesting, thanks for coming back - so do you think this plumber is trying it on a little with the new part, or does it make sense to replace the unit?

Also would you suggest getting him to flush the system to get rid of the dirt inside?

Doubt it is the deverter valve, definately isnt the "plate" as you call it, let us know what happens when you get the noise then completely close the rad valve, got a good idea what is wrong , but this test will confirm, if it is what I think the good news is you can sort it yourself

Hard to explain what i'd describe the noise as?

He probably meant the plate heat exchanger, which I think is the hot water one.
Apparently taking them out and cleaning them with spirit of salts works well.
