Protecting steel lintel from the weather

Hi

I currently have a small extension which is accessed via an opening in the side of the house with a span of 2.4m. I will be taking this small extension down and building a bigger extension in its place.

I am going to stud and board the opening although i'm not sure how to protect the exposed lintel as pictured. This lintel is going to be on the outside wall (possibly for a few months) and i'll need to protect it from the Manchester rain! Electric cables will be gone!

What's the best way to cover it? I thought about just screwing some sheet wood over it and sealing the wood to the wall although not sure that would work great. Any advice appreciated.

Put some plastic sheeting over the top and weigh it down with some bricks.
 
The lintel will be holding up the side of house so I can’t wrap the sheet over the top of the lintel.
 
Is it made from sugar?

If not it may well be OK for 4 years let alone 4 months
 
I'd be more inclined to just brush some red oxide or hammerite on it instead, as that will be better for it in the long term, rather than mess about covering it.

I was going to paint it anyway but didn't know that would be enough. Thank you for your help.
