Hi all.

A friend of mine is a brick pointer. He has been asked to quote a really small job.

The job consists of hacking out the old pointing and repointing. No scaffolding, just ground floor stepladder based.

The potential customer has asked for a public liability certificate to keep his neighbour happy.

I guess the job will be about 3 weeks for two men.

Any advice regarding insurers for a one off.

Thanks, but if he wanted to, could he get one month?
I got mine from simply business

from memory you can cancel early, so have it for a year but cancel after minimum period

a year cost me about £160 for 3 million cover

Cheers for that.

I spoke to him and he seems to be happy with the idea of paying for a year.

As an aside, I did try an online site to get a quote, but brick pointer was not on the drop down list. I guess that he needs to actually phone someone.

Any recommendations?

We use Trade Direct insurance services
If you talk to them they will taylor your policy exactly to your own requirements. Can also increase your liability limits for short periods for particular jobs.
We recently did a large contract on a grade 1 listed building including several weeks leadburning. We were able to go from our normal £6 million to £25 million to cover house and contents for a 3 month period.

Just wondering why he's prepared to accept the Job? If the customers neighbour is asking for sight of the PLcert that sounds to me like the neighbour will be a jobsworth and cause lots of trouble for customer and your friend. I wouldn't have a problem with the customer seeing the PLcert but the neighbour...

The neighbour should look at his previous work, that is better insurance than a policy. But why wouldnt he take out insurance when it is relatively cheap and the peace of mind it gives.

Normally I'd agree but what I (we?) don't know both the customer and the neighbour; is there antagonism between them? does the neighbour leap on every little perceived issue? will the neighbour claim the dust from cleaning out the existing pointing is causing problems?
I may be looking for problems where there isn't any but...

I wouldn't wish to trade without PL - anyone who doesn't is either very confident or working a fiddle.

Three weeks for two men isn't really a small job if the neighbour is getting construction dust flying into their property, its a real nuisance. Presumably it will be ground out rather than using a specialist tool or one of the proprietary dust shrouds. Its a pet hate that trades use grinders and disc cutters without any dust protection. It must be a pain and add time and cost to use water based dust suppression. My advice would to use appropriate dust protection and take out insurance.

The existing pointing is the old victorian lime pointing.

They will simply hack it out.

For what it is worth, a couple of months ago they had to remove the render from a semi-detached house, both properties were rendered. They got me to grind a vertical score line between the two properties, and yes, my Festool grinder was connected to a dust extractor.
