Now then, I think the speed of sound is about 690mph or 300 metres per second (I may be wrong, but I'm avoiding googling it as requested)....

I'm thinking along the lines of a canon ball after gunpowder was invented, or maybe something like a bolt from a crossbow?
 
Not talking about some kind of signal (reflections from a fire, or hand signals across hilltops?)
