We have an existing loft conversion to our bungalow, which fairly typically includes a steel towards the rear of the house buried in the floor (where the dormers are), and another towards the front of the house which sits 90mm higher (into the eaves, so no reason to notch all the original joists).
It is only 1.95m high so we want to replace the dormer and extend it at the same time to the front of the house, which means that we need to do something about the steel. It may be possible to reposition this, although it's more complicated than it may first seem as the original joists are strapped to the new joists so everything would need to be carefully supported to prevent the whole ceiling coming down. As an alternative I wandered whether we could also just raise the whole floor level another 90-95mm by adding another piece of timber (4"x2" maybe) on top of the 'new' ones.
Has anyone tried this? Is there any reason why you couldn't do it?

Rather than run the new timber in line with the existing ones it is better to run the new ones at right angles to the existing ones. It's called cross battening or counter battening
