3) FLEXISHIELD CABLE TO BS8436

The issue of safety with cables concealed in walls and partitions has been an industry issue for sometime, the 17th Edition of the wiring regulations, to be implemented by July this year, has now tightened up on this application.

One of the most significant new requirements is for the potential use of RCDs or RCBOs, especially if walls or partitions are constructed internally with metallic components, also if the installation is not intended for use under the supervision of skilled or instructed persons.

Cables that meet BS 8436 satisfy the relevant clauses for these applications, Flexishield fully meets all the requirements of BS 8436 and has been successfully specified and used during the past 4 years on many projects

Counterfeiting Alert

Counterfeit and copy C45N miniature circuit breakers

Any company has a moral and legal obligation under the HSE and new Corporate Manslaughter and Homicide act (6th April 2008) to take all necessary steps to inform the industry when a potentially fake and dangerous product is brought to their attention. They must also take actions to track down the suppliers of these and the channel through which they are being supplied.

It has come to our notice that a very dangerous and fake copy of the C45N Mcb has been found in another part of the European community.

This copy has no internal workings, which would operate the device in the event of a fault occurring in the circuit that it is supposed to protect. This could have dire consequences for the user and lead to the suppliers and installer facing legal action.
Even though this device has been found in another country they may have found their way into the UK distribution market through non-approved channels and could already be installed. The fake device has similar markings to the C45N Mcb, however we have not supplied this into the UK market since 1991 and any product like it, which is in the marketplace, is either a copy, counterfeit or worse still a complete fake.

What to look for:

Since the copy has very few internal components it is much lighter (a genuine product is between 103 and 110 grams) than the genuine Mcb also the fake is made of plastic which is brittle and light cream in colour not light grey. A large multi9 logo is at the top of the product. There is large CE marking on the front face which the genuine product did not have since it was discontinued in the UK before CE marking was a requirement.

From time to time the subject of counterfeit plugs and power leads is discussed on this and other forums.

Counterfeit plugs are often distinguished by having partially sleeved earth pins in clear contravention of BS 1363, that means that they cannot be legally sold (The Plugs & Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations (1994)). Despite that they are freely available from (amongst others) many ebay sellers, and even Amazon!

Some of the counterfeits also have counterfeit fuses fitted, others have no fuses whatsoever!

For further information see www.bs1363.org.uk This includes samples of ebay and amazon sales listings, and links to reports from PAT testers who have come across these.

The safety of BS 1363 sockets and plugs is under threat from a variety of sources; it is time that the government and the IET took stronger action to counter this.

MK have issued a recall for some of their B and C curve RCBOs

The recall notice states

We have identified a potential safety issue with the manufacture of a limited number of MK Sentry RCBOs which may result in the device failing to trip under certain very limited circumstances, leading to the risk of electric shock.
