We are building an extension and removing the back wall (bedroom & bathroom above). We have structural engineer drawings and have the beams as specified. The opening is 5.1m long. The wall is a cavity wall & the joists sits on the cavity wall. We are holding up the floor above with scaffold boards & acrows, alll sitting on solid floor. Will strongboys suffice on the outher wall ? We have placed them approx. 800mm apart, 6 in total for the 5.1m span. They are all in place, but we have not yet taken out the wall. Any advice/ reassurance about the strongboys / acrows would be appreciated, My concerns are if the strongboys will suffice due to the span of the opening - thank you :-)

This is something i would think your builder should know and it all depends on the height of the wall above, whether it is brick, block and render, stone etc and also number and size of windows or other apertures so a lot of variables could affect it.

You are within the recommended spacings as the Strongboy website gives this advice among others .....

"The distance between props should be calculated from the assessment of the loading, but in any case, it should not exceed 3ft or 900mm.

Always have the loadings checked and use the correct number of Strongboys for the job. If in doubt, you should obtain competent structural engineering advice.

If the width of the intended opening is greater than 4m we recommend that the props be horizontally laced and diagonal braced together using scaffolding poles and proprietary couplings"

If you are worried then put a few more in as it is better to be safe than sorry as they say.

Here are some images from
Both side internally and also an image from the outside, showing the full extend of the extension. The wall being removed is the section behind the bifold doors, There is a bedroom & bathroom above. We have build all of the extension ourselves (foundations, brickwork, drainage, roof ect), have relevant planning permission & building control who has passed everything up till now. My partner is a builder (carpenter), but Im a naturally nervous person, and suppose Im just worried about removing this wall

Can you take some more close up pics of the internal wall leaf please, near the tops of the acrows and where the floor joists meet the wall

Remember that the forum software downgrades their quality

Yes & thank you :-) The span of the wall is 5.1m, 2m of this, the joist sits parallel with the wall (under the bathroom section), the other 3m the joists sits on the wall (under the bedroom). I have attached images of both. You can see the strongboys are in place - but not yet fully in the wall hence why there is still a gap between the strongboys and the wall.

Confusing. The zoomed in pic shows a strongboy but the zoomed out pic doesn't?
