Hi all, I hope you can help - I'm reasonably handy with small DIY jobs but know nothing about building work and so please be kind if I sound stupid!
I'm hoping to remove a wall with a view to accessing and boarding the eaves and wanted some advice.
From the scrawls on my attached image, you'll see a circle around the bit of wall I want to remove, and a line nearby which is where there's currently an access hatch. The hatch is just about big enough to crawl through but barely bigger.
The area of wall I want to remove is approximately 160cm(w) x 165cm(h), which would leave approximately 15cm on either side of the opening and above, and behind which is space approx 3m x 3m (obviously not all standing height). The wall is single skin brick.
My questions are:
a) I assume this is a load bearing wall, in which case I assume I would need a lintel to support it? If so, what sort of size would this need to be, and could it be concrete, or would it need to be steel?
b) How much would you expect a builder to charge for this?
c) Do you think this is a job that could be done by a learning DIY-er?
