Removing Artex from walls

I live abroad where white wall coverings are prevelant. Mine living room was done with white Artex before we bought the house.
Whats the easiest method for removing it and what preparations are needed before repainting.

I personally would not remove artex as some artex may contain asbestos.
See this for details.Not sure what you have in your country but over here we have a product called Artex Skimcoat which can be used to restore a textured surface to smooth. You will then be free to re-decorate the walls or ceiling. If the Artexing pattern is particularly deep, you may need to have the area skimmed with plaster.
