This forum has been really helpful in the run-up to undertaking a partial renovation of a Victorian terraced house.

I’m intending to sand and finish the pine floorboards in the dining room area, however there appears to be a patch of concrete or similar material in the corner of the room, as pictured. As far as I’m aware, it is a suspended timber floor, so not clear on why the patch is there. The previous owner is not aware either.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this may be, and whether it is likely to be able to be removed easily? A quick skim over with a pipework/metal detector was showing a reading on the side closest to the threshold, so I’m hesitant to go in all guns blazing.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I had wondered whether it may be an old hearth of some sort. I will see if I can take a look underneath by lifting some floorboards.
