Replacing Collar Tie

Hi all,

The previous residents of my house began a DIY loft conversion. It looks like they've shorted a collar tie (name found online (apologies if this is wrong and causes confusion)), and put in a door frame.

I'm looking to put in a collar tie from one side to the other and remove the door frame so I can board in that space.

Please see pictures attached of what is present and what I expect the doorframe section previously looked like plus the doorframe itself. Collar height is around waist with the higher one being out of reach.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm nervous to begin any kind of work like this without performing some due diligence.

The collar is tying the walls in so presumably not a problem to temporarily remove until the new collar is fitted, assuming it is just a like for like reinstatement. You could think of ways to provide additional temporary support.

You can just put in a new section of timber across the gap and fix it to the two pieces of the existing ties.

Use two m10 coach bolts to fix to each piece, 1 at 100mm in, the other 400mm from that. Use a timber connector washer (aka spur or star) for extra security. The new piece of timber would be 100mm longer than the two outer bolts.
