First post on this forum, looking for some advice and guidance.
Currently tidying up the appearance of my parents house.
It is an ex local authority semi detached house built in the 1930/40’s (i think).
Most of the house is rendered apart from the lower section of wall where 5 rows of brick are exposed. This was previously painted but the paint is flaking away quite badly.
Today i have scrapped most of the loose paint from the bricks and brushed them down.
The mortar lines under the paint are crumbling away. So i believe the wall will need repointing.
The guttering was leaking for many years and water used to drip/pour from above splashing against the wall in 2 locations. Guttering and roof line are now fixed but the mortar lines and brick faces in these areas are looking pretty bad.
I have included some photos.
I’m debating whether this is something i should attempt to fix myself or if i need to call a pro in.

- How bad is it and is it something that DIY’er can fix? If so, how should this be tackled.
- The bricks that look weathered and have broken faces, do they need to be replaced? Or can these just be painted over once repointed?
- What type of mortar would need to be used?
- I’ve removed most of the loose paint but do i need to remove all of the paint from the face of the brick before repainting?
