Repurposing disused gas pipe

I am in the process of moving some mains cold water pipework in my house which will make it pass through a concrete floor.

There is a copper gas pipe which was disconnected last year that runs through the concrete.

On the face of it, this may seem like a silly question, but is there any reason that I could not use this for the water pipe to save having to dig up the concrete, provided that it is thoroughly flushed through? It would only be a short section, perhaps 200-300mm.

The only concern I have at present is whether there are any joints which could have lead solder used for them, but I'd imagine that the section which passes through the concrete would be a pulled bend, i.e. jointless and no solder.

Thanks for your input Terry but it's more the hassle of digging up and relaying concrete for a new length of pipe that's my concern.

The peace of mind is worth the half hour spent !!

Lead solder would be the least of my concerns !!

Cant see why not, and dont worry too much about the lead in solder as some people mains cold water supply is still through lead pipework.

Using a gas pipe for water will make the water smell of gas. However you could use a straight piece of gas pipe as a conduit for plastic barrier pipe.

If its a gas supply pipe is gonna be at least 22mm. So why not reduce the water supply to 15mm and feed the 15mm pipe through it.

Most water supply changes to 15mm as soon as it's in the house anyway

But your post suggests that you’re only going through a 200-300mm slab and then connecting onto that stub of pipe both ends to pipe up the water!

So, on that basis... drilling a 25mm hole, to take 22mm pipe through a slab of concrete is no sweat!?

There is nothing wrong with using the old gas pipe for water, and as you said fully flush it out. I did it the other way around once. If you can feed 10mm or 15mm plastic through the gas pipe fine. That is if 10mm or 15mm will do of course.

No, otherwise it wouldn't be used extensively.

Nor me. Gas pipes are often coated internally with an oily substance that I suspect wouldn't be very good for your health. I'd be more concerned about that than lead solder
