restore a fireplace

Hi All,

We bought a house last month and we are working in it to make it great (hopefully ).

We have a fireplace in it (please see image)

I would like to get some inputs, in order to restore it, colors of the metal, details...etc (copper ?) .

Also there is some white material in the ribbon around, i don't know if it was here originally or if i have to paint it in white....Any advises would be greatly appreciated,

I'd just use black fireplace polish on all metal. And pick up those dirty fags.

How about those white (paint??) traces on the ribbon ?

I'd put them back to black as well personally
