Retaining Wall UK

The higher ground level is 0.80m to 0.85m above the lower ground level.

We would like to replace a retaining wall that is already there.

We would then like to put a 1.8m fence on top of this wall.

We would like to drill fence post holders into the top of the wall if possible, but want to check that is ok.

How deep must the foundations be?

How wide must the wall be? The present wall looks too thin to us.

Do we need anything like ties?

There are no drains etc in the area.

A fence that high on a wall would pull the top courses off unless you designed a fancy wide ring beam around the top.

225mm wide wall. 600mm deep foundations or deeper onto firm ground if the ground is soft.

We were thinking of using 2 breeze blocks, so that would be 140mm wide each, so 280mm + the cement in between.

The ground is hard clay. Could we get away with 300mm deep foundations? (Someone we know suggested that might be ok.)

We might up the wall height to 1070mm.

How wide would you suggest the foundations should be?

What do you mean by a wide ring beam?

If we slatted the fence so the neighbour could not peer through, but air could flow through, would that help?
