The dictators playbook states that in order to suppress dissent, the dissenters have to be portrayed as a threat to public safety or national security.
Instil fear in a community and you can get away with anything.

I suspect politicians may be realising that other groups can do the same as they do - hoisted by their own petard in terms of influencing others. A mad example burnt down 5G masts.
