Hi all,

Looking for some advice on routing soil stack. Doing the classic terrace renovation of moving the bathroom from downstairs to upstairs in the third bedroom.

Current toilet is downstairs in the corner. A plumber has suggested routing the stack up the back wall. Unfortunately in the corner of the third bedroom is a redundant chimney stack. I assume drilling through the stack is a bad idea (trying to find this out for sure) so do I have any other options given this layout?

Getting a plumber in to move pipes, but trying to be as educated as possible in the meantime!

Appreciate any and all help :)

If the stack is redundant then it would be ok to core drill through it. May need an extension bar on the core drill to reach the outside or drill through with a 750mm SDS bit first then you can come in from both sides with a core drill through each skin of brickwork.

Thanks for this. Totally redundant. Would’ve originally been shared with next door, but stack/flue totally removed from the outside. In mine it has also been removed from downstairs in the kitchen, so this is the only remnant left.

Should really have building regs approval, the BCO may have a view.

If flue stack has been removed from downstairs, it might be an idea to take it out through the upstairs as well, either ensure the remnants are suitably supported above the 1st floor ceiling, or get rid of the lot going through the roof and make good. Give you a bit more space in the room and given you plan to put a 4" hole through the remainder anyway, it'll remove any doubt about the structural integrity of what's left above the soil pipe!
