Hi All,

Just a quick query regarding beams. Having my kitchen extended, as part of this we are breaking a main wall of the original house,

The structural engineer has specified a beam to my builder, and ive seen the calcs but the beam he has specified is one 300mm by 7meter beam, to cover both skins of the double wall. Is this common practice? As i usually thought you would need 2 rsj's bolted together?

Thanks for the input

It depends on how strong the builders are, and how crap the engineer is as to whether its two or one ginormous beast because the engineer couldn't be bothered to work it properly

^W^ has hit the nail on the head; the lightest of the 305mm beams for that span would weigh around 700kg. Ask the SE to give you a lift getting it in.
Can you post his calcs (with your address blanked out) to give us a good laugh?
