Hi

Just a quick one here before I crack on tommorow.Hopefully

Builder has installed rsj to ext wall no cavity very small cavity, 1930s house

I was planning to fix wall plate just above the lintel and start my roof untill he returns Monday with pad stones etc...he has said to fill above the rsj with expanding foam to keep it tight while doing the roof and I can remove the strongboys outside..and crack on..

Does this sound right ? Just want some second opinions really.

Just to add,the cavity I mentioned is only a 10mm gap so maybe just a mortor joint.

Looking closer he has put slate under the joist sitting on rsj inside

If the wall is currently propped on both sides then you can crack on, but I’d be careful as it’s not a particularly safe working environment
You can just pop a few screws in to secure the plate for now, and hold off blasting any big bolt holes until it’s more secure

Is he suggesting that you "pack" between steel and wall above with foam!

Yes, parts of the wall are touching, some not maybe 1 to 3 mm in places,he said just to keep the rsj in place untill he returns monday

If you do foam it, although not sure why you’d want to, make sure you just do the odd spot so you leave loads of room for packing

I thought a little strange, but he was convinced fine,so I could fix the timber wall plate to wall above rsj.Pad stones are to be sorted monday, said he would normally mortar up but the bad weather.

Forgot to mention,he said I could remove the both strong boys to the exterior wall to put wall plate above rsj, would you do this ?? Currently they are in the way

Currently one strong boy on the external wall.

I'd suggest packing it properly with slate or timber wedges before you so any banging above it.

Thanks for the help, all went well packed with slate, and used smaller temporary fixings to wall untill I resin got bolts next week.
