Shockwave Flash has crashed

Keep getting a message informing me that Shockwave Flash has crashed.
Don't know what shockwave flash does or if it is important?
But if it is important how do we resolve the problem?
If not important how do I stop the messages?

I assume your using Google Chrome or Firefox as your web browser? Shockwave does crash now and then on these. I find that closing the browser and re-opening it usually works.
I think it may well have something to do with the websites your on when it does crash though.
