Morning all,

Does anyone have any advice on how to do silicone sealant neatly when one surface to be sealed has a wood grain? In this case it’s a white tile splashback to solid wood worktop with white sealant. When I smooth it off the sealant ‘bleeds’ into the grain slightly and I’ve been using a pin to try and tidy it up which is both extremely time consuming and still not the best finish! I did try using frog tape and that’s slightly better but leaves a lip in the sealant which irritates me too!

Is there a pro trick I’m missing?

Thanks in advance.

If using the tape leaves a ridge then you're not applying quite enough pressure to the silicone with your finger.

I have encountered something similar when trying to match ridged tiles with smooth tiles.

I used washing up liquid for the initial smoothening and then decorators wipes and a sharp filling knife to tidy it up. It took about an hour to tidy up a 2+ metre wall.

A couple of years later, a tiler on site had to work with the same combination of tiles. He just used his finger- it looked awful.

I used a profiling tool for the initial step
