Good evening.
I've recently discovered some small patches of mould on the ceiling of some of our upstairs rooms in our house and was wondering firstly, what is the best way to get rid of it and secondly a cost-effective way to prevent it... Photos of the mould can be found here.

We live in a small three bedroom semi-detached house in the Scottish Highlands, where it's not uncommon for it to be quite camp. We also dry out quite a bit of clothing and outdoor kit in the house and the average humidity and temperature in much of the upstairs is 75% and 16 degrees C (a bit on the chilly side really). We have old storage heaters, which we really detest, external cladding and triple glazing.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

I would say the mold is almost certainly entirely a result of drying washing indoors .
Can be wiped away with a little bleach or proprietary mold remover . Good ventilation prevents mold settling as it airborne .

Us too, corners of upstairs rooms in a brick, heavily insulated house. We use an Ebac dehumidifier whilst drying closes during Winter to avoid too much moisture, and windows are set to the vent option. Think we'll be wiping away mould forever.

If you must dry clothes indoors, put them in a room with an effective extractor fan and leave the door and window shut. Sufficient air will enter through the gap under the door to replace the vapour that is sucked out.

Water vapour is lighter than air so in a still room will rise to the ceiling. Have your fan as high as possible.

Cheaper to use a tumble dryer .

OP,
you've noticed that "its not uncommon for it to be quite camp" in the Highlands - indeed. In fact i'd say what with the blue makeup and the drafty kilts its possibly very camp up in them there hills.
