Square shaped adverts appearing in bottom right corner of my windows 10 laptop

Hi All

need some help please...

for the past few weeks, am getting random adverts appearing on my desktop intermittently. the exact location of the ad is the bottom right corner of the screen. see picture please.

i have scanned my laptop several times with windows defender but it doesn't show i have any virus.

anyone has any idea what this is and how to get rid of the adds.

By the way the ads are on the desk top itself not on a browser.

That is a bit drastic as a first action. Download Malwarebytes free from here

Run it and delete anything it picks up. You have malware not a virus and Windows Defender, or any other anti-virus wont pick it up. If that doesn't get rid of the ads THEN restore your Windows 10.

The system is compromised with unknown junk. The fact something got installed is already a massive failure.

However if you are 100% sure that displaying adverts is all it does, and 100% sure that it did not download and install other viruses/malware/trojans/keyloggers/other without your knowledge, and 100% sure that it did not reconfigure things such as using alternative DNS resolvers or routing network traffic via other compromised systems, and you are 100% sure that whatever you used to 'remove' it was in fact 100% successful at removing everything and there was absolutely no possibility whatsoever of any other problems being caused by it, then you could continue to use the system as normal.

If not, then the next time passwords are entered for whatever reason or the user logs into their bank account - who knows what could happen.

I would say download hijackthis EXE and run on your machine. The exe will create a log file and you put that into hijackthis.de website to analyse. It will show you the nasty entries. Use the EXE to fix (remove) those entries.

many thanks all. i appreciate the quick replies.
i have downloaded malwarebytes and run it. it found 1 item PUP.optional.booking and i have quarantined it. i hope that was the culprit but only time will tell. i hope its fixed the issue , it not , then i will move on to the next suggested option.
